Air Conditioning Not Cooling Properly Questions

These answers explain common situations. A technician must inspect the equipment or plumbing before confirming a diagnosis or price.

Why is my AC blowing warm air?+

Your AC may be blowing warm air because the outdoor unit is not running, the system is low on refrigerant, the coil is frozen, the filter is dirty, the condenser coil is dirty, the compressor is not operating, or the thermostat is not calling correctly. The first thing to check is whether the thermostat is set to cool and whether the outdoor unit is actually running. If the outdoor unit is off while the indoor fan is blowing, the air from the vents will not be cooled.

Does warm air mean my AC needs Freon?+

Not always. Low refrigerant is only one possible cause. Warm air can also come from a failed capacitor, dirty filter, frozen coil, bad compressor, dirty outdoor coil, thermostat issue, or airflow problem. Refrigerant should not disappear in a sealed system, so if the system is low, there may be a leak.

Should I turn off my AC if it is frozen?+

Yes. Turn cooling off and let the coil thaw. You can usually leave the fan on if the system is operating safely, but do not run cooling while ice is present. Running a frozen AC can damage the compressor and cause water damage when the ice melts.

Why is my outside AC unit not running but the inside fan is?+

That usually means the indoor blower is operating, but the outdoor cooling equipment is not. Possible causes include a tripped breaker, bad capacitor, failed contactor, bad condenser fan motor, compressor issue, thermostat/control problem, float switch shutdown, or wiring issue.

Why does my AC run all day?+

An AC may run all day during extreme heat, but it should still make progress toward the thermostat setting. If it runs constantly and does not cool well, possible causes include dirty coils, low refrigerant, weak airflow, duct leakage, poor insulation, undersized equipment, aging compressor, or high humidity.

Why is there water around my indoor AC unit?+

Most AC systems remove humidity from the air and drain that water through a condensate line. If the drain line clogs, the coil freezes and melts, the pan cracks, or the pump fails, water can appear around the indoor unit. Water should not be ignored because it can damage flooring, drywall, ceilings, and electrical components.

Why is airflow weak from my vents?+

Weak airflow can come from a dirty filter, dirty blower wheel, blower motor problem, dirty evaporator coil, closed vents, blocked return, duct leakage, collapsed ductwork, or undersized ductwork. If changing the filter does not fix it, the system needs airflow diagnosis.

Can I keep running the AC if it is not cooling?+

If the AC is simply struggling on a very hot day but still cooling somewhat, it may be okay temporarily. But if it is blowing warm air, frozen, leaking water, making loud electrical sounds, or tripping breakers, it should be turned off and checked. Running a failing system can turn a small repair into a major repair.

What should a technician check on an AC not cooling call?+

A proper AC diagnosis should check thermostat operation, filter condition, airflow, blower operation, evaporator coil condition, condenser coil condition, capacitor, contactor, condenser fan motor, compressor operation, refrigerant pressures, temperature split, drain safety switches, and visible signs of duct or airflow problems.

When is AC replacement better than repair?+

Replacement becomes more reasonable when the system is old, repairs are expensive, refrigerant leaks are present, the compressor is failing, comfort has been poor for years, energy bills are high, or the system has repeated breakdowns. A single minor part failure does not automatically mean replacement, but repeated problems on an aging system should be evaluated carefully.
