Homeowner education only. Turn equipment off and call a qualified professional when there is gas odor, smoke, burning, exposed wiring, refrigerant, carbon monoxide risk, or active water near electrical components.

Gas Smell

A strong gas smell requires the homeowner to leave the area and contact the gas utility or emergency services. Do not troubleshoot over the phone like a normal repair.

Carbon Monoxide Alarm

A CO alarm is an emergency. The homeowner should leave the home and follow emergency instructions. The furnace or fuel-burning appliance should not be used until checked.

Electrical Burning or Smoke

Electrical burning smell, smoke, melting wires, or repeated breaker trips require shutdown and inspection. Repeated resets are unsafe.

No Heat in Cold Weather

No heat can be an emergency when outdoor temperatures are low, pipes may freeze, or vulnerable people are in the home. Temporary safe heat may be needed, but unsafe heaters should not be used indoors.

No Cooling in Extreme Heat

No cooling can be urgent for elderly people, infants, people with health conditions, or extreme indoor temperatures. The priority is occupant safety, not only equipment repair.

Water Leaks

Water leaking through ceilings or around electrical equipment is urgent. The system should be shut off and inspected.

Frozen AC

A frozen AC should be turned off. Running it can damage the compressor and cause water damage when ice melts.

Furnace Rollout or Safety Lockout

Rollout trips, repeated limit trips, or safety lockouts should not be bypassed. The furnace is shutting down for a reason.
