What Combustion Means

Combustion is the burning of fuel. In a gas furnace, gas is delivered to burners, mixed with air, ignited, and burned to create heat. That heat is transferred through the heat exchanger to indoor air. Combustion gases should remain inside the heat exchanger and be vented outdoors.

The blower moves household air across the outside of the heat exchanger. The household air should not mix with combustion gases.

A safe furnace needs correct gas pressure, proper burner operation, proper combustion air, safe venting, a sound heat exchanger, working safeties, and proper draft.

Heat Exchanger Function

The heat exchanger separates combustion gases from the air going into the home. It allows heat transfer without mixing the two air streams.

If a heat exchanger cracks, separates, rusts through, or becomes compromised, combustion gases may affect indoor air. Not every crack produces measurable CO in the supply air at every moment, but a compromised heat exchanger is a serious defect.

Signs that may raise concern include visible cracks, rust, flame disturbance when blower starts, rollout trips, soot, abnormal burner flame, repeated overheating, corrosion, and CO alarm events.

A heat exchanger inspection requires skill and proper tools. It should not be guessed from age alone, but age and overheating history matter.

Carbon Monoxide

Carbon monoxide is produced when fuel does not burn completely or combustion gases do not vent correctly. It is dangerous because it is odorless and can cause illness or death.

Potential sources include furnaces, boilers, water heaters, fireplaces, gas stoves, generators, vehicles in attached garages, blocked vents, cracked heat exchangers, poor combustion, and backdrafting.

Symptoms of CO exposure can include headache, dizziness, nausea, weakness, confusion, and flu-like symptoms, but HVAC professionals should not diagnose medical issues. If a CO alarm sounds, the homeowner should leave the home and contact emergency services.

A professional should never dismiss a CO alarm without proper investigation.

Flame Rollout

Flame rollout means flames or hot combustion gases are moving outside the normal burner area. Furnaces have rollout switches to shut the furnace down if this occurs.

Rollout can be caused by blocked heat exchanger, blocked flue, cracked heat exchanger, burner problems, improper gas pressure, combustion air problems, or venting issues.

A tripped rollout switch should never be reset without finding the cause. It is a serious safety warning.

Venting Problems

A furnace must vent combustion gases outdoors. Standard efficiency furnaces often use metal venting. High-efficiency condensing furnaces usually use PVC or approved plastic venting, depending on manufacturer requirements and code.

Venting problems include blocked flue, disconnected vent, improper slope, undersized vent, corroded vent, bird nests, leaves, snow blockage, ice blockage, sagging PVC, improper termination, and poor combustion air intake.

High-efficiency furnaces also produce condensate, which must drain correctly. A blocked condensate trap can create pressure switch faults and venting problems.

Backdrafting

Backdrafting happens when combustion gases that should leave through the vent come back into the home. It can happen because of blocked vents, negative house pressure, exhaust fans, dryers, fireplaces, tight homes, poor chimney draft, or improper vent design.

Signs can include soot, moisture near draft hoods, melted plastic, rust, odors, CO alarms, or flame disturbance. Backdrafting must be taken seriously.

Combustion Air

Fuel-burning equipment needs air for combustion. If the furnace room is too tight or combustion air openings are blocked, the appliance may not burn properly or vent correctly.

Storage boxes, insulation, remodeling, closed mechanical room doors, and building changes can reduce combustion air. Tight homes may need dedicated combustion air or sealed combustion equipment.

Burner Problems

Burners should ignite smoothly and burn evenly. Dirty burners, rust, misalignment, or poor gas pressure can cause delayed ignition, flame rollout, noise, poor combustion, or unreliable operation.

A professional should inspect flame appearance, ignition sequence, burner carryover, and signs of soot or rust.
