Banging or Booming Sounds

A bang at furnace startup can point to delayed ignition. Delayed ignition means gas is present for too long before it lights, then ignites suddenly. This can happen from dirty burners, poor flame carryover, weak ignitor, gas pressure issues, burner alignment problems, or combustion problems. This should be treated seriously because repeated delayed ignition can stress the heat exchanger and create safety concerns.

A bang during blower startup or shutdown may come from ductwork expanding and contracting under pressure. Thin metal ductwork can pop when the blower starts or when heated air expands the duct. This may not be dangerous, but it often points to pressure, duct sizing, or support issues.

A loud bang from an outdoor AC or heat pump may point to compressor starting problems, fan blade impact, loose panels, or internal compressor issues. A compressor that bangs or struggles at startup should be checked for capacitor, voltage, hard-start condition, refrigerant pressure, and compressor condition.

Buzzing Sounds

Buzzing often points to electrical problems. In an outdoor unit, buzzing may come from a contactor, capacitor, transformer, relay, loose connection, compressor trying to start, or low-voltage issue. A homeowner may hear the outdoor unit buzz but the fan does not spin. That can happen with a failed capacitor, stuck fan motor, failed contactor, or compressor start problem.

A buzzing contactor can happen from low voltage, weak coil, dirty contacts, loose wiring, or control chatter. Chatter should not be ignored because it can damage contacts and create unreliable operation.

Buzzing from a furnace or air handler may come from a transformer, relay, control board, blower motor, loose panel, or electrical component. A strong electrical buzz with a burning smell should be treated as urgent.

Humming Sounds

A low hum can be normal from motors or transformers. But humming without the system starting is not normal.

An outdoor unit that hums but does not start often points to a failed capacitor, locked compressor, failed condenser fan motor, weak voltage, stuck contactor, or mechanical failure. The unit should not be left humming because motors and compressors can overheat.

A blower motor that hums but does not start may have a failed capacitor, stuck wheel, bad motor, control issue, or seized bearings. A motor that hums and overheats should be turned off until diagnosed.

Squealing or Screeching Sounds

Squealing often comes from motors, bearings, belts on older systems, blower wheels, or inducer motors. Older belt-driven blowers can squeal from a loose or worn belt. Direct-drive motors may squeal from failing bearings.

An inducer motor that squeals or screeches on a furnace may be failing. Since the inducer is part of the furnace safety sequence, failure can cause no heat or pressure switch faults.

A squealing blower can also point to motor stress from high static pressure, dirty blower wheel, failing bearings, or poor alignment. The sound may start intermittently and become worse over time.

Grinding or Scraping Sounds

Grinding is usually a mechanical warning. It can come from motor bearings, blower wheel contact, inducer failure, fan blade contact, or compressor problems.

A scraping blower may mean the blower wheel is loose, rubbing the housing, or the motor mount has shifted. If the blower wheel breaks or rubs heavily, it can damage the cabinet, motor, and wheel.

A scraping outdoor fan may mean the fan blade is hitting the shroud, ice, debris, or a loose guard. The system should be turned off if the blade is hitting something.

Rattling Sounds

Rattling can be simple or serious. Loose access panels, screws, duct straps, line-set covers, or cabinet parts can rattle. But rattling can also come from a failing motor, loose blower wheel, loose inducer, compressor vibration, fan blade imbalance, or duct movement.

If rattling happens only when the blower runs, check panels, blower wheel, motor mounts, duct supports, filter grille, and return ducts. If it happens only when the outdoor unit runs, check condenser panels, fan blade, motor mount, refrigerant lines, contactor, and compressor mounts.

Whistling Sounds

Whistling usually points to airflow restriction or leakage. A filter grille may whistle if the filter is too restrictive, the grille is too small, or the return duct is undersized. A small gap around a filter rack can whistle as air is pulled through it.

Supply registers may whistle when dampers are closed, registers are too small, ducts are under high pressure, or airflow is being forced through a restricted opening.

Whistling is often a duct or static pressure symptom, not an equipment failure by itself.

Clicking Sounds

A click when the thermostat calls or the contactor pulls in can be normal. Repeated clicking is different.

Repeated clicking can come from a thermostat, relay, control board, contactor, low-voltage short, weak transformer, pressure switch cycling, or safety switch opening and closing. In a furnace, clicking during ignition attempts may point to ignitor, gas valve, flame failure, pressure switch issues, or control lockout.

A professional should listen for whether the click happens at the thermostat, indoor unit, or outdoor unit.

Whooshing Sounds

A whoosh in a heat pump during defrost or mode change can be normal. The reversing valve changes refrigerant flow, and pressure equalization can create a noticeable sound.

A whoosh from ductwork can happen when dampers open, the blower starts, or airflow changes. If it is loud or new, duct pressure or zoning should be checked.

A whoosh at furnace ignition may be normal if mild. A loud boom or delayed ignition sound is not normal.
