Oversized AC
An oversized AC cools the home too quickly and shuts off before removing enough humidity. This can create cold but clammy rooms, short cycling, poor comfort, higher wear, and temperature swings.
Oversized equipment may also require more airflow than the ductwork can deliver, causing high static pressure and noise.
Undersized AC
An undersized AC may run constantly and still not satisfy the thermostat during hot weather. But before calling a system undersized, a technician should check airflow, refrigerant, coils, duct leakage, insulation, and heat gain.
Many systems that seem undersized are actually suffering from duct leaks, dirty coils, low refrigerant, or poor airflow.
Oversized Furnace
An oversized furnace may heat the thermostat area quickly and shut off before the rest of the home is comfortable. It can short cycle, overheat, create noise, and stress ductwork.
Oversizing can also cause high temperature rise if airflow is not adequate.
Undersized Furnace
An undersized furnace may run constantly and fail to maintain temperature in cold weather. But the professional must check heat output, gas pressure, airflow, duct leakage, insulation, and thermostat location before blaming size.
Load Calculation
A proper load calculation considers the home, not just the old equipment. The old system may have been wrong. The home may have changed because of insulation, windows, additions, finished basements, or duct modifications.
Manual J is commonly used for residential load calculation. Duct design and equipment selection also matter.
Duct Capacity
Even correctly sized equipment can fail if the ducts cannot move enough air. Duct capacity must match system capacity. A larger unit on undersized ductwork creates noise, high static pressure, weak performance, and equipment stress.
Home Load Problems
Comfort problems can come from the home itself. Poor attic insulation, leaky windows, solar heat gain, air leaks, unsealed crawlspaces, poorly insulated bonus rooms, and ducts in hot attics all increase load.
The HVAC system may be blamed when the building envelope is the real problem.
