Spring HVAC Issues
Spring often exposes systems that sat unused during winter. Air conditioners may fail on the first warm days because capacitors weakened, contactors pitted, condenser coils collected debris, refrigerant leaks worsened, or thermostats were switched incorrectly.
Spring is also pollen season. Filters can load faster, outdoor coils can collect debris, and allergy complaints may increase.
Spring maintenance should prepare AC systems before heavy summer runtime.
Summer HVAC Issues
Kansas City summers can be hot and humid. AC systems may run long hours. Common issues include capacitor failures, clogged condensate drains, frozen coils, dirty condenser coils, weak airflow, high humidity, AC running constantly, and systems not keeping up during heat waves.
Humidity is important. A home can be cool but still uncomfortable if the AC is oversized, airflow is wrong, fan is set to on, or moisture sources exist.
Condensate drains are under heavy load in humid weather. Drain clogs and water leaks are common summer calls.
Fall HVAC Issues
Fall is transition season. Homeowners may switch between cooling and heating. Thermostat confusion is common. Heat pumps may change modes. Furnaces may produce a dusty smell at first startup.
Fall is a good time for furnace maintenance before cold weather. Ignitors, flame sensors, burners, blowers, venting, filters, and safeties should be checked.
Winter HVAC Issues
Kansas City winters can create no-heat calls, furnace ignition problems, dirty flame sensor issues, pressure switch faults, frozen heat pump concerns, auxiliary heat complaints, high electric bills, and dry indoor air.
High-efficiency furnace vent terminations can be blocked by snow or ice. Condensate drains can freeze or clog. Heat pumps may frost and defrost. Homeowners may mistake normal heat pump operation for failure because supply air feels cooler than gas furnace air.
Storm Related Issues
Storms can cause power outages, voltage problems, thermostat issues, tripped breakers, outdoor unit debris, hail damage, flooding, and control board failures. Lightning or power surges can damage electrical components.
After a storm, a professional should check power, breakers, disconnects, contactors, boards, motors, outdoor coil damage, fan blade damage, and drainage.
Cottonwood and Outdoor Coil Debris
Cottonwood, grass clippings, leaves, and debris can clog outdoor condenser coils. A dirty condenser coil reduces heat rejection, raises pressure, increases compressor stress, reduces cooling, and raises energy use.
Homeowners can keep the area around the unit clear, but coil cleaning should be done carefully to avoid damaging fins or electrical components.
Humidity and Basements
Kansas City homes with basements or crawlspaces may have humidity problems. Moisture can affect comfort, air quality, musty smells, and AC runtime. Return leaks can pull basement or crawlspace air into the system.
High humidity should be diagnosed by checking AC operation, duct leakage, airflow, moisture sources, and possible dehumidification needs.
Rapid Weather Swings
Rapid temperature swings can confuse homeowners and stress equipment. A system may switch from cooling to heating within days. Thermostat schedules, heat pump settings, and seasonal maintenance become important.
A professional should ask what mode the system is in and whether the issue started after switching seasons.
