Age of Equipment
Age matters because older systems are more likely to have worn compressors, motors, heat exchangers, coils, controls, and refrigerant leaks. Older systems may also be less efficient and harder to repair.
But age alone does not decide everything. A well-maintained 10-year-old system with a failed capacitor is different from a 20-year-old system with a leaking coil and failing compressor.
Repair Cost
Repair cost should be compared to the system’s age, condition, and expected future life. A small repair may be reasonable even on an older system. A large repair may not be reasonable if the system is near the end of its life.
Major repairs include compressor replacement, evaporator coil replacement, condenser coil replacement, heat exchanger replacement, reversing valve replacement, major refrigerant leak repair, and major electrical failure on older equipment.
Safety
Safety overrides convenience. A cracked heat exchanger, rollout problem, unsafe venting, carbon monoxide concern, severe electrical damage, or major gas issue changes the decision. A system that is unsafe should not be kept running just because repair is cheaper.
Refrigerant Type and Leaks
Older R-22 systems with leaks often lean toward replacement because refrigerant is costly, the equipment is old, and leak repair may be expensive. Even newer refrigerant systems should be evaluated if there is a major leak.
Adding refrigerant repeatedly is usually not a good long-term plan.
Comfort History
If the system has never kept the home comfortable, replacing one part may not solve the issue. The problem may be ductwork, sizing, airflow, insulation, or installation quality.
Replacement should include solving the original comfort problem, not just swapping equipment.
Breakdown History
Repeated failures show risk. A system that needs repairs every season may be more expensive to keep than replace. The homeowner should understand the pattern.
Efficiency and Operating Cost
New equipment may reduce energy use, but savings depend on equipment efficiency, ductwork, installation quality, home insulation, utility rates, thermostat habits, and maintenance. A professional should avoid unrealistic savings claims.
Warranty
A system under parts warranty may be worth repairing, but labor and refrigerant may still cost money. A system out of warranty has more financial risk.
