What does it mean when the AC is running but the house is still warm?

It usually means one part of the cooling process is failing. The blower may be moving air, but the outdoor unit may not be removing heat. The outdoor fan may run while the compressor is not pumping. Why is my AC blowing warm air instead of cold air?

Warm air can come from several different problems. The outdoor unit may not be starting, the capacitor may be weak, the contactor may have failed, the condenser fan may not be moving enough air, or the compressor may not be running. It can also happen when airflow is restricted, the evaporator coil is frozen, the thermostat is set incorrectly, or refrigerant performance is off.

Is low refrigerant the most common reason an AC stops cooling?

Not always. Low refrigerant is possible, but it should not be the first guess. Refrigerant is sealed inside the system and should not be used up like fuel. If the charge is low, there may be a leak or a previous charging issue.

Many AC systems get misdiagnosed because refrigerant is added before airflow, coil condition, blower operation, outdoor fan operation, and electrical components are checked.

Why does my AC freeze up during summer?

An AC freezes when the evaporator coil gets too cold and moisture turns into ice. Low airflow is one of the most common causes. A dirty filter, restrictive filter, dirty evaporator coil, weak blower motor, dirty blower wheel, closed vents, blocked return, collapsed duct, or duct restriction can all reduce airflow enough to freeze the coil.

Why is my thermostat blank when the AC stops working?

A blank thermostat is not always a bad thermostat. In cooling season, a clogged condensate drain can trip a float switch and interrupt low-voltage power to prevent water damage. A blank thermostat can also come from dead batteries, a blown low-voltage fuse, failed transformer, loose wiring, tripped breaker, open furnace door switch, or control board issue.

Replacing the thermostat without checking the 24-volt control circuit can miss the real cause.

When is AC replacement better than another repair?

Replacement may be worth discussing when the system is older, breaking down often, using expensive repairs, running constantly, struggling during Kansas City heat, leaving the home humid, or facing a major compressor or coil problem.
